I never knew what happened to Thomas until I chanced to meet my correspondent who has assisted me with the Thomas generations in this book[94]. John and Elizabeth and their five children emigrated from Plymouth, Devon on the Bark Elizabeth 20 Nov 1850 and arrived on 7 Jan 1851 in the Port of New York, USA. Why did they come? An interesting court case I rather think prompted them to move on to Canada. John’s uncles wanted a piece of property which their eldest brother John had left to his child (unfortunately John had not married the mother but still acknowledged his child and left her a small piece of property). They hid his will (which now has long since been probated) and likely with the help of her husband she took it to court (because she knew of the legacy) and won in the early 1840s (certainly a credit to the legal system that protected her). I think there is likely always a reason that people do emigrate (and perhaps sometimes it is just an itchy foot!). John’s father Robert had died in 1827 and any property that he did not own personally moved to his brothers by copyhold so the eight children of Robert did have to make a living and Robert had prepared for that having his sons train in various disciplines. Both John and his older brother Robert were left the property that their father owned but Robert sold the property and went to America. The only daughter married a year after the death of her father so was perhaps already arranged. Passage of property was a strange thing sometimes and in John’s case he also inherited property as a young man that always went to a son named John Pincombe in the family and it would appear that his eldest uncle John had already passed that property to him before he died as John was living at Lower Gatcombe near Molland when they decided to sell that property and come to Canada in 1850.[97] I visited Bishops Nympton with my husband and my Blake cousin and his wife in 2008. It was interesting to be in a village that my mother had memories which she shared with me that her father had passed to her from his father and grandparents.

[94] Thank you to Auriol Carney for contacting me nearly a decade ago now; our correspondence has been quite wonderful. It is always great to meet new cousins. Being the recluse that I am; I do find emailing back and forth is like meeting people. I am a rather reserved person and seldom move outside of my greater family.

[97] All of this happened long ago but it does seem appropriate to mention as this entire family of seven children (eight were born but one died in his teenage years) left Bishops Nympton area (the children of Robert Pincombe) to live elsewhere in England and around the world.

[108] At Ancestry DNA my siblings (three plus myself tested) have some of our strongest matches (Siderfin line) with the descendants of Charlotte Rew. Because their Grandmother Charlotte (Rew) Griffith was a twin to my great grandmother Elizabeth (Rew) Pincombe our matches become much closer since these two women shared the exact same DNA. Since Elizabeth (Rew) Pincombe’s descendants have tested in large numbers in the various databases this has led to quite interesting discoveries with DNA.

[175] Priest, Derby St Alkmund Parish Registers, “Baptized Thomas Son of Thomas and Siderfin Kent” a likely error on the part of the recorder.  The mother of Thomas (father of this Thomas being baptized) was Grace (Kent) Siderfin and perhaps in the discussion the priest accidentally mixed up the wife of Thomas (Sibble (Williams) Siderfin) with the mother of Thomas father to the infant). There was a marriage and a burial plus three baptisms that day, Accessed Ancestry 19 Oct 2023

[193] Henry Kent (Siderfin) was baptised in the Parish of St Alkmund, Derby on the 16th September 1813.  His parents were named as  Thomas Siderfin Kent, Labourer, and Sibil and they lived on Orchard Street.  Priest was James Bligh (Matlock Record Office Baptisms in St Alkmunds 1813 No. 20). (Auriol Carney) Reviewing the marriage and this was also performed by James Bligh it is most peculiar that he made this error actually as they were married under the Siderfin surname, Marriage lines – Page 49, No. 147 (Derby St Alkmund 1809-1850 Marriages, accessed Ancestry 19 Oct 2023 (Elizabeth Kipp)
