It was wondrous to see the hostages home once again - President Trump can be thanked for his work at arranging this and being there for them to greet them home. It has been an horrendous two years plus for those individuals held by Hamas (and others it appears). Ripped from their homes and from a music festival. The twenty eight deceased hostages will return home with four arriving yesterday. It isn't complete until they are all home. Do not attack other countries; do not take hostages; do not murder is the message from all of this. This is an opportunity for the International Community to halt such violence which is ongoing in other places. Find a way to live together.
I cleaned the basement and worked outside for about an hour. More leaves swept off the laneway and just a little left to do; maybe half of an hour. Then I will rake towards the end of the week - the front law. I also managed another metre of the garden bed at the back. I think it will take me the entire month plus to get right around the garden but then it will be all set for winter. The main garden hopefully I will get that done but I also need to do the front bed. I think it all needs to be grass; I am definitely not a gardener.
No work on the matches but did think about them. I did work on the first photo book which has the oldest pictures and no index. So I am preparing the index from scratch. It will get better in that regard as Edward has really good indexes for about fourty years. He just didn't go back and do the earlier years; at least I haven't found that in his files.
So today the main floor and I maybe work on some matches - Chromosome 15. I want to go through this one carefully (although I have done the others carefully as well) but I know that this chromosome more than any has so many matches that I have no idea of the people mostly. Just the ones that I have labelled as Known and they are few. The number of huge Buller matches is amazing although I did find a few that were mislabeled and should be Rawlings. The length is usually around 40 to 45 cM which is a good length. Short lengths of this particular area is a "common pile-up area" as mentioned in the DNA Painter application which I use to a great extent. I still remember when Johnny Perl introduced the world to his app and I immediately signed up for it and paid the amount to give me greater access. It is a marvelous app especially with five siblings kits all intertwined in different ways.
The life of a country doctor is a busy time; my daughter was called into Emergency to help out yesterday. The Emergency Rooms are the entry way into any hospital unless you have planned it. Keeping them open is very very important particularly in the country.
Exciting news from my other daughter; she and her American colleague (a former student and now a professor in her own right at another university) have received a grant to work on AI; the only sticking point is the government is shut down and they will have to wait for it to come back up. AI is an amazing tool; I haven't used it a lot - a few organized searches and a lot of random searches but I do plan to use it and already thinking of how to do simple programs to best utilize the power of AI. However these two researchers are still rolling up their sleeves and getting to work; hopefully the money will soon flow and pay their PhD students who are also getting into their part in the research.
Wondrous to see a Nobel Prize in Economics for a Canadian (three people in total and one from Canada) and Prime Minister Carney commented on his research. Research is best done in groups harnessing the most important function of all universities - to provide research making life better for all the peoples of the world. Even if I did not like school ever really; I do not fail to see the huge value in schools at all levels. In those years of learning from the age of four to the age of 21 when I graduated from University I did, many times, have individual teachers who were particularly interesting but I would say to the credit of my two grandparents (paternal grandfather and maternal grandmother) they harnessed my ability to learn as I learn somewhat differently from other people. I do not attach blame to the system but rather accept the fact that my method of learning was different; my method of expressing my learning also different.
My grandfather once said to me when I told him that I didn't like the way that we were reciting the times table and he said you do not have to like it; you have to do the work so that you move on but you can use your own methodology just being part of the wave as you pass through the different stages. He was a very clever person (a blacksmith by trade) who could speak English and French (not unusual I discovered actually for a person educated in England), he could read Latin which he learned attending the Parish School where their teacher was a learned priest (Anglican) and very keen for his students to have all the knowledge that he could pass to them. I did want to learn to speak French when I was young but the opportunity to go to the Gifted Program for me was passed over by my mother (French was included in their program). I do think that some children who show great potential do need to be in a protected program to keep them interested and in school. I remain convinced that children going to school should already be in command of the local language and parents should not expect teachers to take time to help their children with the language common to that particular school in Canada. It is a parent's responsibility to place their children into a group prior to intake into school so that they can manage the language as well as their classmates. One of my many volunteer activities when my children were in school was helping with a remedial English reading class (12 students) for students in French Immersion. The children quickly learned to read in English they just needed that extra bit of teaching to give them that level. But the school system can not afford to pay people to do that to any great degree; parents must do the work at home.
Another beautiful day on God's earth; let us be happy and rejoice in it. For that is our reason for being; to care for the earth, to bring forth descendants and to make life the best it can be for the world. Rogue nations beware; your need to fit into the slots of proper behaviour is coming quickly. There isn't room in this modern world for war; it is too destructive. But the need to be ready will always be there.
Tea drank and solitaire puzzles are next then on to cleaning.
