Remembrance Day today and I will be watching the TV for the remembrances downtown in Ottawa and at other cenotaphs across Canada. As a child at school we marched to one of the local churches from our schools to take part in a Remembrance Service at Church. Our lives were much more militaristic in those days. Long lines of children walking neatly in row after row is forever seared in my memory. The loss of so many young people in the First World War but also in the Second World War and wars that followed. Our losses have been huge. We must never forget their sacrifice in their generation. Our youth in this generation are struggling to obtain jobs and we must be there to help them by carefully buying Canadian and supporting Canadian industries as they begin to spring up due to the governments concentration on ensuring that monies are spent to support these industries.
Prayers for Governor General Simon recovering in hospital just noted that today on the news and she will be unable to be at the forefront of the Remembrance Day ceremonies in Ottawa. She will be replaced by the Chief Justice of Canada.
I did have good success with Chromosome 5 matches yesterday and five of the fourteen cross over points proven which is not too bad considering I do not know that many of the matches on this chromosome. I also completed the basement cleaning as I missed doing it last week when I succumbed to the flu bug which is quite a nasty one actually. I shall wear a mask when I am out this winter I think although I have now had my flu shot.
Today I have asked for a grocery order to be delivered this afternoon and I just wanted to try it out because I found the weather a bit too severe to try to carry on to the groceries after getting my flu shot. I doubt I will do it again but it seemed like the right moment to do that and so I did. I did need all the items but also could have done without until Friday when I will go shopping again. I did have to throw some food out during the hydro outage and still have some more that will go. But it was whether I wanted to eat scallops, salmon and eggs all week that was the question and it is nice to have the chicken stew which I prepare. Normally I like to just pick out my own food in the store and buy it myself but we did have to do this sort of thing during COVID although I mostly went shopping at Metro in the allowed time frame for the elderly. That worked very very well. Since everything is in the recycled cardboard box I did ask that it just be put on my porch by the door and the bell rang to alert me. There are only 18 items and half of the amount is my chicken. I will have my coat on so that I can just open the door and bring it in easily (plus my mask).
I will be cleaning the main floor today but should be all completed well ahead of the arrival of the grocery box. They will deliver it in a recycled cardboard box which is very handy as I can then use that to put my paper recycling out to the curb and I would not have to go back and pick it up at the end of the day. That means just every other week to bring in the bins from the Collection and as winter draws on I generally only have the blue bin out except once a month the green bin.
Listening to Power and Politics last evening was rather interesting as the Ministers of several departments were discussing trade and how new Canadian entities will be set up for the military to use for the production of equipment as well as other government departments. These would be private corporations to produce particular items which we did use to have as I recall.
Unfortunately the YouTube presentation for the Church Service on Sunday was not functioning however I read the service myself and will just have to miss that one. Probably the first Remembrance Day Service missed by me in many many years except during early COVID when once again I was reading the service on my own from the bulletin received although the YouTube channel was set up early.
Arm totally recovered from the flu shot and into Day two now and usually it is fully effective by Day fourteen. Although I appear to have already had the flu that is going around it is still good protection from the other flu possibilities that travel in our air over the next six months. The numbers are slowly ticking up here and it is apparently mutating once again so good that I have had the shot for sure.
I continue to think that the pipeline to the east is the most important right now and certainly the Keystone XL Pipeline has been discussed again of late and I do not see why it could not provide the oil to the south when they want it and to Ontario to refine to save the money on buying it back at three times what it is sold for to the United States. It helps to employ the people who lost jobs lately. It provides good jobs to a large number of people actually and we should never stop refining our own oil ever again. Ontario is a huge user (and I expect Quebec is as well and certainly the refined oil could find its way there by truck from Ontario so two large markets make it more than practical to do this and any leftover can be sold in Europe or the Maritimes although oil is produced in the Maritimes (but they need to refine it as well and stop paying to have that done). The logistics just have to be worked out. Port Churchill will be open for a good long season and oil is always stockpiled. I was very excited to hear that the pipeline proposed by First Nations members to Prince Rupert has been approved which is really great news. The good news is far outweighing the difficult news.
The main floor to be cleaned today and will begin around 8:30 or 9. It is generally three hours of cleaning. Last night I had a lovely scallop dinner where I browned the scallops in a little olive oil and then added red wine vinegar and continued to let them simmer, when the pearl couscous was cooked I added it to the scallops and then had peas in a small dish along with that and a slice of toast. It was delicious. I do love fish and try to eat it at least twice a week. I am much stronger for sure. I had had a salmon sandwich for lunch earlier (yesterday was two breakfasts and two lunches actually spread out over the day since I was working fairly hard and trying to regain my lost weight which I am close but need to keep maintaining my weight when I am working/exercising hard). My husband had a very sweet tooth and used to buy a lot of goodies at the store but he would have eaten even more if I had continued baking as I once did. He would cajole me into eating one with him which meant I did weight more in those days but I really do not have a sweet tooth and do not find it that appealing except on special occasions like a birthday or other celebration.
Working on the matches will continue and we will see where I am at by the end of the day. Tea to make and then solitaire puzzles to do before breakfast.
