A Roger de Pencombe in 1308, 1311 and 1315 receiving property recorded in the Exeter records with the property at Bonelgh.
I am assuming this is Bondleigh (formerly called Boneleigh) which is a village in Devon south of Chulmleigh and north of Okehampton. It is 36 kilometres south of North Molton. Is it coincidental that there is a de Pencombe family at Bondleigh in the early 1300s at the same time as there is also a de Pencombe family in Pencombe, Herefordshire. I do not find a Roger Pencombe in the records of Herefordshire. As mentioned there is a John de Pencomb, Thomas de Pencomb, William de Pencomb at various times in the 1100s to the 1400s listed in the Herefordshire Archives.
All of the records were destroyed that were held at the Devonshire Archives in Exeter in 1942 when it was bombed. A huge loss for genealogists although over time some items have managed to surface particularly because genealogists went in and transcribed wills prior to that time period as genealogy was an active hobby in England as far back as the records go really. Families did keep individual records for family members on occasion.
In the case of the Lay Subsidy of Devon in 1544 no Pencombe or derivative is located on this Subsidy at Bondleigh. Likewise at Bondleigh the Lay Subsidy of Devon 1524-7 does not list Pencombe or derivative in the listing. These records were originally transcribed by T. L. Stoate and he gives credit for some to others.
